Dual Diagnosis

Dual Diagnosis is designed to help you better understand and support individuals who have both intellectual/developmental disabilities and mental health challenges. During this session, you will gain a basic understanding of the distinction between these two conditions and what it means for someone to have a dual diagnosis. The workshop will explore the difficulties faced by mental health professionals in diagnosing mental health issues in people with developmental disabilities and will provide insights into how affective disorders, anxiety disorders, psychosis, and personality disorders manifest in this population. You will also learn about treatment and therapeutic strategies along with practical ideas you can implement immediately to better support those with dual diagnoses. This class is intended for Service Alternatives' Employees, Foster Parents, and SA-served Clients. Meet Your Brain: Appreciating and Navigating Neurodiversity is designed to expand your understanding of the human brain and its complex functions. In this session, you will explore the different types of brain cells and how their communication influences our behavior, thoughts, and emotions. You will also gain insights into the brain’s main structures, their critical functions, and the stages of brain development from birth through adulthood. The workshop will introduce you to the concept of neurodiversity, exploring its causes – ranging from genetics to environmental factors – and providing practical strategies to support and enhance brain function through neuroplasticity. By the end of this workshop, you will be equipped with knowledge and activities to foster cognitive potential in yourself and those you support. Please note there is a required homework component which must be completed and submitted prior to attending. The assignment is expected to take about 1.5 hours. This class is intended for Service Alternatives' Employees, Foster Parents, and SA-served Clients. Intro to Dialectical Behavior Therapy

Introduction to Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) familiarizes participants with the core principles and practices of DBT, an evidence-based practice effectively utilized to support individuals with a variety of challenges. During this session, you will explore the origins and foundations of DBT and understand how biological and environmental factors often drive ineffective behaviors. This workshop emphasizes the importance of empathy, validation, and acceptance in supporting individuals on their journey toward defining and achieving a life worth living. Participants will learn essential DBT tools, including Behavior Chain Analysis, Core Mindfulness skills, and techniques for Distress Tolerance, Interpersonal Effectiveness, and Emotional Regulation. This workshop is designed to challenge and change perspectives, equipping you with practical skills to manage challenging behaviors in both professional and personal settings. Please note this course is a prerequisite for attending advanced DBT Skills training. This class is intended for Service Alternatives' Employees, Foster Parents, and SA-served Clients.
