Psychological First Aid (PFA) introduces participants to the foundational concepts of PFA and prepares them to provide this peer-mediated intervention to individuals following a potentially impactful life event. In this workshop, participants will develop their competencies to use the SAFER-R model of PFA to support individuals following powerful life events. They will also explore how to apply PFA within teams to foster psychological safety, build individual resilience, and improve team cohesiveness.
Psychological First Aid is available through attending a pre-scheduled training session, scheduling an onsite session, or as a Train-the-Trainer model, allowing your organization to integrate this knowledge into your training programs. Learning outcomes:
Through completing this training, participants will be better able to:
- Understand the resistance, resilience, recovery continuum as it relates to a person’s experience of a powerful event.
- Understand and discuss the importance of providing peer psychological support during a powerful life event.
- Recognize common psychological, physiological, and behavioral reactions to powerful events.
- Explain the mechanisms of action of PFA.
- Practice the SAFER-Revised model of individual PFA.
- Understand and discuss the importance of self-care techniques for effective provision of PFA.
Participants will practice techniques and receive tools they can immediately apply in their work settings. These tools will allow them to:
- Establish a human connection in a non-intrusive, compassionate manner.
- Stabilize and orient emotionally overwhelmed individuals.
- Connect individuals to social support networks.
- Support adaptive coping, acknowledge coping efforts and strengths, and empower people.
- Provide information that may help individuals cope effectively with the psychological impact of powerful events.
Target audience:
This training is beneficial for anyone who works in interacts with people on a regular basis, including formal and informal leaders of all levels and across professions. The information and competencies advanced through this training are applicable in everyone’s life outside of work.
Class length:
6 hours, which can be divided into two 3-hour sessions when taught in a virtual setting.
